Title: Simul v1.2
Post by: Deep Toaster on August 05, 2010, 11:19:20 pm
After 42 days away from my calculator, I found that the super-optimized (read totally uncommented) program that six weeks ago was supposed to be my Axe contest entry now makes almost no sense to me whatsoever. And so as I attempt to figure out what I was trying to do, here's a quick project announcement:

First of all, it's called Fourplay. This is only a working name, and it'll definitely change ;D

BASICally, it's Pong. It's also Falldown, Keepin, and Avoid (very original, as you can see already ;)). It starts with a very basic version of one of those games (just like thousands of other programs out there). Then it cycles through them randomly at random intervals, and if you lose one, you lose (still like hundreds of others).

Then it gets interesting. After a while, you start playing two games at once, then four (on split screens). Meanwhile, the speed gets faster. It gets really interesting when you start having to use both thumbs and forefingers to play :D

I don't have a link cable, so the only thing I can show you is the back-buffer ;)

Yes. I was away from my calc for exactly 42 days.

I survived ... somehow.

If you do that multitasking game or something similar on the 83+ or 84+, that will rule!

Thanks!

Well, my calculator surprised me today: the game actually works. I can't believe it. My first Axe program actually works... :D

Then I nearly lost it all due to a group ERR: x.x
Title: Re: __________, my Axe Parser contest entry

ouch x.x, sorry to hear :/

I hope you can finish it, though. Try to do some backups somewhere else in case

Thankfully, I still have it. There was a bug with the group, but it was an ERR:MEMORY. I'd already deleted the program, so I thought I was screwed for the contest, then somehow (miraculously) it worked.

I posted more info about the error here (http://ourl.ca/6542/108091).

Bug report: You forgot to do Fix 4 before exiting the game. Results: Stat Plot/Y= screen is messed up (small fonts won't show up), same for Mem->About.
Title: Re: __________, my Axe Parser contest entry
Post by: Deep Toaster on October 04, 2010, 11:45:21 pm
Really? I thought I'd added that in...

Which means the one I sent (and the only copy I have left anymore) is an early version that had bugs D: Hopefully no one notices anything more, they're pretty obscure bugs that took a while to find...
Title: Re: __________, my Axe Parser contest entry
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 04, 2010, 11:46:24 pm
THat's the only bug I could find so far, from what I have seen. NO crashes, btw.

That's a good thing. I actually finished all the serious coding and bugtesting pretty early. The last few weeks were all graphics, so there shouldn't be anything unstable about it :)

EDIT: Aww, darn, you're right. I forgot to add in the Fix 4 when the user quits from the main menu.

Thanks! Just remember not to quit from the main menu -- quit while playing the game instead because I forgot to take care of all the exit points. And in case you ever do accidentally quit from the menu, all the bug is is that I forgot to Fix 4 before quitting, so certain OS screens'll look odd (like the Y= page). Just run Fix 4 from an Axe program to fix it ;D

Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 19, 2010, 01:35:47 pm
YAY!

I wonder if this will get featured. My concern is that they need to test the game before featuring it and I fear they'll never get to reach level 3, as beating level 2 is extremly hard x.x.
Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: Deep Toaster on October 19, 2010, 01:44:26 pm
I reached that 4-game level once ... by cheating and slowing the game down with Mirage's interrupts. Now that I've taken interrupts out, I can barely get to level 2 x.x Should I make it easier?
Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 19, 2010, 03:20:10 pm
I would prbly make it a bit easier, like having level 2 last a bit shorter. Level 1 is fine, though.
Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: shmibs on October 19, 2010, 03:57:49 pm
multiple difficulty levels would be nice, and all you would have to do is add in a few conditional pauses.
Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on October 19, 2010, 04:00:02 pm
Currently I think there is already two modes, though. One mod works in 15 MHz and the other 6
Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: Deep Toaster on October 19, 2010, 04:43:46 pm
Nope, both speeds run at 6 MHz. The only difference is that the slowest level ("Turtle") has an added pause.

The reason I didn't make more levels was because the way I did pauses, just one count was enough to slow "Ninja" speed down to "Turtle." But I got a few ideas from some threads here, and I might change it a bit to support more levels.

EDIT: Level two's already shorter than level one; don't know how to make it easier without slowing it down :(

Meh, I suck at making screenshots. Especially when I'm playing a game where I fail over and over even at 25% speed x.x Anyone willing to make some for me? I'll give you peanuts and credits in the readme ;D

I could maybe make a screenshot when I get some time to put in Omni download section. If I manage to get past LV1 I could maybe take a few more for the ticalc.org version that you could add there.

Yeah that can work too. I think at school when they banned zip files I could still download them from https instead of http :P

In some browsers the https changes to http when visiting regular sites, though...

Crap, I just realized something from the screenshot: This is a really old version of Simul! There's that bug I had months ago with Level 4 only displaying 3 games... I must have replaced the new one with this D:

EDIT: I didn't see this earlier because I've reached Level 4 a total of about 2 times without giving myself a hack.

Ouch sorry to hear, I hope you still have a copy of the fixed version. X.x

I remember a few years ago when I updated many of my files on ticalc.org, I accidentally uploaded old versions of them and lost the new ones. X.x As a result, plenty of fixed bugs came back.

Nope, not anymore. The one on my thumb drive is the one on ticalc, and the one on my calc is the one on my thumb drive. So I'll have to fix it on Wabbit.

Title: Re: Simul v1.0
Post by: yunhua98 on November 07, 2010, 07:40:35 pm
yeah, but Omni's got features in multiple platforms.  ;D
also, although Axe is great and I would want it to win, I think it may not win the POTY.  since most (I think) of ticalc's users are there for the games only, they may not be that interested in programming stuff, even if Axe created most of those games.  I may be wrong though, to be honest, I hope I am.  ;)
(no offense Quigibo  ;))

EDIT:  actually if everybody on Omni votes for it, it'll win!  :D

Yeah true, lol. It seems that every major releases are coming from here nowadays, as well as Cemetech.

Sadly, for all the cool games that came out this year, unless Calc84 released Project M in 2010, I doubt any game stands a chance against Axe and Doors CS, because both are so useful for programmers and Doors is a huge step above Mirage, aside from the larger file size. I think this year it will be a battle between Axe and Doors CS. However, no matter what, all games that came out are really great and deserves their feature as well.

That said, if ticalc.org gets a crapload of users that aren't programmers, maybe games will compete very well against Axe and Doors CS. It's gonna be very interesting this year. There are 15 programs, btw, although 3 or 4 are old programs that were overlooked back then.

If you plan to vote, please be quick, though, because I think this year polls won't last long, since there are 4 POTY surveys coming along (TI-81, TI-83+, 68K and TI-Nspire). If another PC utility gets featured there, there will be a PC utilities poll as well.

TODAY, during philosophy class, I borrowed a friend's calculator to play, and Simul was there (he just googles for games and downloads in ticalc, -.-)

Anyways, I thought it was great, a mix of several games. Am now putting in my calculator. Great job Deep Though

It's really a cool game. Someone at first may look and say: oh, just Falldown, Pong, etc. BUT then he realizes you have to play them together at once and this is what is great and original about that game.

When did he get the program? I updated it a few days ago to fix a weird bug in Level IV (not many people would have noticed it anyway, though :P).

It was taken away, by me! I only take them to Chemistry and Maths classes from now on and never play. If I do do anything non-class it's programming, probably Asm or HEX since they have more to do with Maths and I feel fair with myself

Yeah, someone (http://goo.gl/QMET) kept bugging me to work on a game, so I actually have a PapiJump demo done. Still having trouble getting stuff off my calc, though.

Lost my cable a long time ago. Now every time I want to upload something, I have to ask a friend to let me transfer it to his calc so that he can upload it to me :(

That sucks! Really, that's why I have 4 cables PC-Calc and 7 Calc-Calc cables.

When it's test eves all my class room is a mess, everybody chaning files, asking me to transfer them, lots of calcs, lots of cables in a single table.

It's not hard to get them.

PC_Calc cables i ask friends who don't give a s*** about Computers (girls) :)

Lol nice. I am surprised because over here those cables would cost like $20 each and I remember the Silverlink costed that much, too, so I doubt anyone here would have liked to give away his $20 cable.

the price is the same here. some people just have no clue what things are worth.

True. It doesn't help that the cable sometimes comes with the calc, though. It's a good thing but then people think it might cost like $1 or $2 X.x

On the other hand, I am sure some people will try to sell them $40 to people who are technology-illiterate. X.x

But not everyone needs to connect them to the computer.

The illiterate-technology-blonde-girls in my class gave up trying to connect it to the computer, they will never be able to do it MWAHAHAHAHAAH (me laughing evily and collecting their cables)

Oh I meant people who just want a cable to get games but are not necessarly familiar with prices of those cables. Most will fail at linking their calc, though. X.x

How do you get to level 4? O.O
Title: Re: Simul v1.2
Post by: Deep Toaster on January 17, 2011, 02:03:52 pm
I didn't get there in the screenshot, but you just have to beat level 2. Basically it's like this:

Level I: 6 rotations
Level II: 8 rotations
Level IV: until you die

what about level III?
Title: Re: Simul v1.2
Post by: Deep Toaster on January 17, 2011, 02:36:36 pm
There's no level III. By levels I, II, and IV I just meant the number of games on the screen :D

Sorry for the necropost, but I was wondering, where is the source? The readme said that FOURPLAY.8xp is the source, but there is no FOURPLAY.8xp file.  :-\

I must say that this is a really fun game. I reached a score of 13 (and just one more round would get me to level 4  :(). Pong is probably the hardest game for me, since it's so fast, and Falldown is definitely the easiest.  :)

Source isn't included, sorry. Main reason I want to keep it to myself now is that I realize now how bad my code really was XD

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, there's some difference in difficulty between games. I should definitely have made Falldown harder (by putting fewer openings in each row).

EDIT: Wait, does it still say the source is included? Guess I should change that.

Yeah, the readme says the source is included.

By the way, I reached level 4 but died in less than a second, since I used the arrow keys for the lower right game. :P

And, the main reason I wanted the source was so that I could edit the difficulty of the games :P (and make it so that I start from level 2 or 4).

I remember I played it again and again on the emulator at 25% speed just so I could get a decent screenshot of level four :P
