A redditor called Ameobea is making a terraria like game for the TI-84 Plus SE.

First thought that comes to mind: that is not Minecraft. It irks me quite a bit when people name their projects after well-known and well-received games that they strive to emulate, but (no offense to the author) are so incredibly far from doing. Perhaps what irks me even more is that this usually results in artificially boosted popularity and games like this become more sought after than a game that's legitimately detailed and polished and fun.

Exacty. It does not deserve the attention it gets if you look at all those other awesome( also basic) games out there.
I'm not really a z80 basic programmer, but I'm pretty sure I can have the same result on my 89 after an hour programming(probably less).
It reminds me on the "Skyrim" thing. Got famous undeserved.

I remember the "Skyrim" one lol. Yeah, that "minecraft" one doesn't look very well compared to the other ports I've been seeing. (Yo Stefan, how about dat progress of yours? :P)

Someone should tell him to come here to see how he reacts in front of true coders :P

OK ok ok. Clam down guys. I renamed it. Sorry. It only has 122 "upvotes" it's not like it's internationally famous. I saw this and wanted to share.

122 O.O

It's okay Augs. :P But did you see the other 2D ports? If you search "Minecraft" on ticalc.org several results come up, including ones with an animated screenshot.

Also Yeong, that's kinda on pause for now. And I think that when I pick it back up, I'll probably create a more RPG-ish something of it using the same engine(perhaps even minicraft?).
People would know that if they read my blog. :P

Well, it’s relatively good code anyway.
You all sound like he claimed portal as his own.

Anyway, I hate it when people get fame off of dumb programs.
I never knew why skyrim would show up early when I googled for programs

Lol, it was funny at school when people would brag that they made a program that could generate random values between 1 and 6 to simulate dice

Yeah it would be nice if we invited him here. Maybe he might be interested in doing further calc programming and learn new stuff :)

As far as his game go I agree that games should not be named after popular games just to inflate your download count, unless it lives up to the original game name, although seeing this guy isn't part of a calc site he might not be aware of this mentality in the community. There were better Terraria/Minecraft releases in the past on ticalc.org, although his game doesn't really look that bad compared to a lot of junk I have seen. It can just be annoying when big calc games get like 1000 views on Youtube, while a Skyrim menu-based game with very few graphics get 800000 just because it's called Skyrim. In the guy's Terraria clone, graphics could be improved, but in TI-BASIC it would be slow, so he might have to use an hook-based sprite lib or an alternate language. Hopefully if someone invite him he doesn't just stick to Reddit and come here :)

Of course I rather prefer that we remain respectful to new coders, though, especially considering many of us have named games after a big franchise in the past and they weren't necessarily all that great. If he comes here we could show him examples of what he can do on a calculator such as SolidFrame 3D and Serenity (a pure BASIC example of what kind of graphics you can have)

I actually posted in his thread, not bashing the game but mostly saying that a lot more can be done on the calc and I hope he updates his game with more stuff and graphics.

I posted a link to http://ourl.ca/6869 as an example of what he could do. Also when I wrote my post above I totally forgot about how fast dual layer ASCII sprites could be in BASIC using no assembly code inside the game! O.O

But again, this was made by Builderboy, and he managed to get 45 years of TI-BASIC experience in 3 hours. <_<

So this is just letters inside each other? right?

Two letters combined together, except that in his game, the 2nd letter is shifted right by 1 pixel and each row of text are shown at 7 pixels intervals instead of 8. :)

LOL - I didn't expect it to be popular or anything. I'm NOT trying to compete with minecraft or anything stupid like that - its just that me and my friends all enjoy the game and I've been playing around with programming on the graphing calculator so decided to share what I've made. It's neither advanced nor revolutionary. After all, it's a one-bit pixel-based terrain generator. However, I understand their sentiments completely. Upon reading their posts, I agree with their opinions and see where they're coming from. Maybe I will stop by and talk, but all my "programming" has ever been is, as I said, stuff to do during math class :p

I have another program I'm working on that generates caves; I was thinking about adding it on. I've made several other programs in the past, for the sole reason of distributing to my classmates and for the fun and accomplishment of writing them like minesweeper, tic-tac-toe against AI, memory match, etc. I really like pixel-by-pixel graphics, and that seems to stretch the limits of BASIC as I know it.

Anyway, if you wanted to relay this to the people on the forum, I'd be very thankful!

I appreciate the time, Ameobea

That was his response

This is Ameobea, creator of the game and reddit post that has become such a hot debate so suddenly :p

I didn't expect it to be popular or anything. I'm NOT trying to compete with minecraft or anything stupid like that - its just that me and my friends all enjoy the game and I've been playing around with programming on the graphing calculator so decided to share what I've made. It's neither advanced nor revolutionary. After all, it's a one-bit pixel-based terrain generator, made by a highschool student with no formal instruction in programming. However, I understand your sentiments completely. Upon reading your posts, I can get your opinions and see where they're coming from.

Anyway, this attention was unexpected and I honestly NEVER meant to cause conflict.  I'd name it something else, but mimecraft was what it was based on so... why not name it minecraft?  And it isn't even a full-scaled game!

Hiya and welcome here, and don't worry, no hard feelings held against you for making a Minecraft game :). It is just that on ticalc.org, for years there have been floods and floods of Minecraft, Zelda, Mario, Dragon Ball and Pokémon clones that did not even come close to what the original games were. For example, most Zelda games are actually turn-based RPGs where you see no enemy graphic nor can't move anywhere else. The problem became so brutal a few years ago that Ticalc.org created download sections just for Dragon Ball and Pokémon clones. Since then, the reputation of calculator clones of popular game franchises has been kinda tarnished in the TI community (although it's even worse on some other sites, since Omni tends to be a bit more tolerant), even moreso since the 800K views Skyrim clone incident and the infamous Halo clone.

Thanks for the clarification, though. Also the cave generation program seems interesting. It would be nice if it was added to the Minecraft game so there are pre-generated underground paths like the original game. Lava/water might be a bit overkill to add, though :P (especially if you use Pixel-test for collision detection)

Hi!

Really, the the other members are just upset at viewers ignorance and lakco f knowledge of calculators.

But wow, I thought that barely anything could get more views than portal programmed by one of the best coders.
I never realized how many views skyrim had.

Hi there, we always welcome new members, but yeah, such projects just kinda grab more attention to the normal person if they contain names like 'minecraft'

You can’t blame anybody for naming a video of what they did
Yeah, “I made minecraft for graphing calculator” isn’t the most modest, but still

Hello Ameobea!

I just saw this, and your project actually looks very promising. Especially coming from someone coming out of the blue with it.

I think the only problem people are having to cause any kind of issue is certainly not fault of your own, but how there's suddenly a burst of attention towards it, and people finding these think that's the pinnacle of calc development.

This one in particular:

Your project is impressive though, and could become something of a milestone of it's own right. Though definitely push it in more of a Terraria-like game. It'd benefit greatly being a 2D platformer.

Welcome Ameobea!

I'm glad to see that you enjoy programming your calc like we all do. There's even some old guys around that still enjoy programming their calcs. :D

Yeah about the Skyrim
and people finding these think that's the pinnacle of calc development.

About that, I remember the Skyrim game getting lots and lots of positive comments like if it was the best calc game ever, then you visit the Spencer Zelda video and people say it's fake, or you visit comment pages of one of the major featured Ticalc.org hybrid BASIC program and half of the people are saying it's total junk.

The ironic thing is that the bad comments are mostly from people who have never owned or programmed a calculator before, so you would expect Reddit gamers to have the same reaction, right? O.O

And if you check, the new comments for skyrim are hours and days old
Portal has comments weeks and months old
I wonder my ‘ncraft’ video didn’t get famous like skyrim though
I was cheap and looked like the real deal

I think I posted nCraft on Reddit, but it didn't get much attention. Maybe the slow framerate turned people away or it was missed.

That got posted on tiplanet, but now I realize that cheap videos seem to get fame

Oh lol. I think if it was called nCraft and made it on Reddit it might have tarnished the real nCraft reputation since everyone would have thought Chockosta's game was fake :P

That is what bugs me: people thinking real games are fake only because they do not want to believe that a calculator can do so awesome stuff.

Ameobea, I want to apologize for what I've said earlier in this thread, since I might have offended you.
I wasn't really upset on you, but a little frustrated with the ignorance of some people, who find programs like yours revolutionary.
When I say that I could make something similar, it is true. But I am now more of an experienced programmer, and I used to make programs where I'm not too proud of now.(e.g: Mario Basic). But that's part of the process of becoming a good programmer.
So, please, don't feel stopped to continue progress on this. ;)

Same as Stefan, I would like to clarify my previous post. I say nothing about your work, it is really hard to make great games in pure basic. I am just against the fact you called it MineCraft and that people say it is even hard to make a moving pixel.
But I'd be glad to see your other projects if any :)

That is what bugs me: people thinking real games are fake only because they do not want to believe that a calculator can do so awesome stuff.
On the other hand, there are many fake calc videos on Youtube so it isn't surprising to see some people think something is fake. But again it's kinda weird when they do it with stuff that really looks legit.
