hmm advice, dont do something too huge as first programs, I mean try to avoid grayscale for now, master all the TI BASIC tricks and once you are confortable with them you can experiment grayscale and such things

use an emulator...they run on your computer so you don't have to worry about battery life
I point you to
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/84/8442.html
,
http://users.hszk.bme.hu/~pg429/pindurti/
, and
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/372/37211.html
. All of these are decent emulators. The crowd favorite seems to be Pindur TI, the 2nd one, but I personally like TilEm, the last one. VTI, the 1st one, is nice if you can get it to work, but I never could
. All of these will require you to get a ROM image from your calculator. I would recommend
http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/373/37341.html
as it has worked for me in the past.
Hope that information helped.

Ok, time for me to join this topic.
How is progress coming along, if any yet?
I'll give the same advice as up there, but my story is a bit ironic with that. (GQES)
