Zelda name suggestion
« on: September 13, 2008, 10:44:27 pm »
I am starting a new Zelda project for the TI-8X series and I am having trouble thinking of a name. If you see a name you like please vote or if you'd like to contribute to the name list, select other and post it down below, thank you.

Do you have a lil idea what the Zelda game would be about? Like for example, is link becoming evil (like my game Dark Link Quest) or is Zelda becoming evil, do u have to find crystals, shards, etc?

Talisman of Fate, Phantoom Blade and  the Secret of the Millennial Moon sounds cool tho :)

Personally I'd say it's too early to worry about a name. Work on a name after you've worked on storyline and have decided on gameplay elements. The name should reflect something about the game's theme. "The legend of Zelda" should be fine for a working title now, that way people have a general idea of what you're working on. =)

I completely agree, it's easier to name a game, then to make a game based off of a name.

The thing is, I have a sorta story for each one, so basically I am making the game based on everybody's opinion for a name.  All of them are different in some way or form and have there own back-story, so that's why I put up the names, instead of preceding with a nameless Zelda; but this doesn't mean I'm not working on it at all, currently I am working on sprite data, battle's, items, etc... but the major things like some monsters and bosses completely depend on the name picked.

DJ Omnimaga: like I said above, same applies, what the game is about, is basically a reflection of the name, with it's own little twists.

necro: hahaha... um... are you serious O.o

Art_of_camelot, Netham45: I pretty much disagree, because if your working on the game, and a name pops up that you like, but you would have to change things to reflect what the title is, then it's going to be a bad mess... Of course if you are making a nameless Zelda, with all kinds of stuff in it, you would come up with a name for it eventually, but I like to play things ahead of time.

kalan_vod: agreed, somewhat, most of the time dark is more fun =D

ALL: Would it be easier for all to make a decision if I posted the background story for each name? Of course with each new name presented, I'll make a background story based on it.  So if people add names, this story list will grow.

I guess it depends of people. I would like a story idea though, it might be easier for people to vote.

In last resorts Tribal, make 10 Zelda games... or 11 if you include Necro's idea, then everyone will be satisfied about the name

The thing is, the will all(hopefully) make it to a download section near you, but as my 1337 skills of TI improves, I'll move my main programming up to z80.  So basically, the first few will be in basic most likely, but as my ASM skills improve, they will slowly but surely go to either ASM progs, or flash apps

hehe I understand. Just one thing though, I would advise against switching to ASM in the middle of a game developpement. If you start the game in BASIC, finish it in BASIC, then do a new game or a new version in ASM. I say this because in the 7 years I have been part of the TI community I never seen any project being completed when the author switched language in the middle of developpement before. Idk if it's a curse but this happens everytime. This is also why there's so few good games being released

So either start in BASIC and stay with BASIC until the entire game is done, or start it in ASM.

Oh woah, who switches in the middle of development? Unless you have basically nothing done, that is NOT an option. If I made it sound like that, sorry, but unless the project I am working on is a complete and under failure and absolutely needs ASM, I just will make ASM subroutines for it  :D. But yeah, no-one should EVER switch in the middle of development, that can be very bad and I don't mean, ah that's bad, I mean, WOAH holy... that's messed up, bad  ;)

Whatcha talking about? Switching is perfectly fine in the middle of development.

All that means is that you have to start back from square 0.

It might even give you time to rethink what you're actually doing, and then go ahead and do what you wanted to do from the beginning. That is, after you get all the base code out of the way.

...
Then again, perhaps you shouldn't. That just takes way too much work and would discourage/dishearten anyone but the most hardcore programmer.

If you started in BASIC and need more power, you can turn to xLIB or Celtic III for that.
A Cherry-Flavored Iambian draws near... what do you do? ...

well the problem is that usually  BASIC programmers who does have good BASIC knowledge and are making an insane game in BASIC, and when they switch they expect to be able to do the same as easily in ASM, but they all give up when they realise it's too hard for the yet

A lot of times, writing something out in BASIC can help you set up a general structure for your program or test a routine or formula or something that would be a lot more complicated in asm. I guess that's different than writing half a game and switching over to asm, but i think if you have a decent knowledge of asm it's not really a bad idea. I've seen what you're talking about happen a lot too, but i think that is, like you said, people who were really efficient in BASIC but had no knowledge in asm.

I'm working on some basic sprites right now, when the poll is over, I'll start working on the special sprites such as specific bosses, enemies, and items, but for now it's just enemies, items, and tiles that will be seen throughout unless I decide to make better ones.

DJ Omnimaga: agreed, people who think that they can easily switch are sadly mistaken, and if they are going to, then they also need to know that ASM is a much more advanced language than the built in TI-BASIC.  Of course after they get a good grasp, they can rebuild a ASM version working along-side or after the TI-BASIC one is done.
