.co.cc is quite popular, but not sure if it is 4ever.
looking for simplicity? webs.com

I use .co.cc as domanin and 000webhost.com as host.
The fastest and easiest one is BY FAR webs.com, go for it!

.co.cc is a nice, free domain name, but you have to renew it annually. I used www.co.cc to register my site and it's hosted by 50webs, which is ad free and has fairly fast servers.

Just remember, your main page has to be named index.html to avoid taking your users to the parent directory ;)

I use a site called wikidot.com. You don't get total freedom, but for a simple site, it's really nice.

You renew it? That's wonderful!

I like Webs because it's fast and easy-to-use, and even if you don't get your own domain name, SITENAME.webs.com is still a pretty short URL. It's not technically ad-free, but you can get rid of them by changing your site to "plain HTML mode" (you'll have to know HTML, of course).

EDIT: Whoops, wrong link :-\

Knowing Webs is the defunct Freewebs and that Freewebs did not let you use your own design, can Webs let you do so? Alternatively, there's Freehostia, but sometimes it's slow. Cooliojazz uses x10hosting or something, which is the free branch of Dreamhost. If you need PHP you might want to use Freehostia, though. Otherwise for a simple site, Webs might do fine if they don't limit files to 900 KB like they used to do before.

Another suggestion, try to not start your own forum unless you plan to have several projects there, especially not a calc forum. THere are already too many forums on the web and most people will prefer going on more active ones.

Yeah, there's an option in Site Settings to convert a site to plain HTML. Then Webs basically becomes a plain webpage hoster with some extra features (like a built-in HTML editor).

Ah that's good. Do you have enough freedom like if you made your site in Notepad, though?

Yes, but I believe it automatically adds a few scripts to the end of your page, like 000webhost.
