I made a WWII timeline in HTML and JS for a school project, thought I would share it if anyone is interested.

Looks nice. My suggestion: Make the dots a bit more visible, and give them mouseover text so you can see what event you're going to look at. Right now it's just semi-blind clicking.
Edit: also make the contrast between the color per year a bit stronger.
