To clarify about buying vs. leasing:

• Leasing is borrowing the server, so to speak. It means that we agree on a certain period of time you want the server, and you can either prepay the total amount (preferred) or pay each month. Breaking this agreement is not allowed. However, once the borrow period is over, you can opt to renew/change the contract, or terminate it. For example, Bob gets the VPS for 3 months and pays $21. He then decides he likes the VPS and changes his contract for 6 months, and pays $42. He then gets more money and decides to move to a better VPD, thus ending his contract. The VPS is then leased to someone else. This is best if you're not sure how long you will keep the VPS.
  
• Buying means that you have complete ownership of the VPS. You still pay $7/month. However, this means that if you have to sell it, you'll have to do what I do - post here! This is best if you are planning to keep and use the VPS for a long time!
  

In both cases, you still have access to the server and server control panel. The only real difference is whereas buying it gives you complete ownership, leasing allows you to easily "drop" the VPS if you don't want it anymore.

If you're confused about why I didn't just cancel the VPS... It's because this price and specs are a one-of-a-kind deal that doesn't exist elsewhere in the VPS marketplace. Rather than wasting it, why not give it to someone else?

Also, multiple leasing is possible - 2+ people can "lease" a server, but make sure that everyone finds a way to pitch in!

So what company owns the VPS? Has it been reliable?

ChicagoVPS. As for reliability... I wouldn't host an important website on it...

To be honest, the company isn't exactly the greatest out there. It's well known in the hosting community as a ducky company due to overselling, lack of transparency when major events happen (such as getting hacked), service problems, employee arrogance, etc....

In my personal experience, it's not too bad. I've had a food uptime until just recently, when my VPS started going wonky and shutting down by itself. Customer service says that they are working on it, but as of yesterday my VPS is still down...

Bottom line: don't use this for important websites/bots/etc! Almost perfect for a MC server (just make sure to save the world and back it up frequently), and really perfect for a development server! (Web, coding, IRC, etc.)
